This course is designed for those shipboard personnel who maybe designated as Ship Security Officer (SSO) as defined by Regulation VI / 5 and STCW Code section A-VI / 5, Table A-VI/5 of the STCW 78 as amended in 2010 and as per IMO Model Course 3.19 & 3.23 of the ISPS code. The emphasis of training & instructions deals with providing knowledge and understanding of duties & responsibilities with respect to the security of a ship, and in ensuring, implementing and maintaining the Ship Security Plan in compliance with the ISPS Code and Section A-VI/5 of the STCW Code, as amended. Furthermore, the course gives emphasis on how to address the problem of piracy and armed robbery against ships, and for liaising with the Company Security Officer (CSO) and with Port Facility Security Officers (PFSOs).
COURSE AIMS & OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of the course, participants should be able to gain in-depth knowledge on various aspects of security and safety for ships and port facilities which covers identifying existing security measures, procedures and operations, evaluation of key shipboard operations, identifying possible threats, and to establish and prioritize security measures, and identifying weaknesses including human factors in the infrastructure, policies and procedures.

TEACHING METHOD:
Instructions will be undertaken through a series of lectures, tutorials and case studies where necessary.
ENTRY REQUIREMENT / TARGET GROUP:
The course is mandatory for all Deck officers prior issue of Class-3 Deck.
COURSE CERTIFICATE:
A certificate of course completion shall be issued to those who shall satisfactorily fulfill the course requirements. Certificate of Proficiency is issued by the Department of Shipping on completion of an oral test.
