Duration: 1 Day (7 hours)
This course provides seafarers with essential education and training in firefighting onboard tankers (oil, chemical, or liquefied gas) to meet the knowledge, understanding and proficiency requirements set out in STCW Tables A-V/1-1-1 and A/V/1-2-1 for oil and chemical tankers and liquefied gas tanker cargo.
COURSE AIMS & OBJECTIVES:
- Learn typical tanker fire response and firefighting organisation and procedures, including :
- Fire control plans and equipment location
- Team make-up and leadership
- PPE requirements and dressing for fire fighting
- Equipment being ready for immediate use
- Use of equipment within a fire team
- Communication methods and their limitations
- Identify the special hazards associated with cargo handling and transportation of hazardous and noxious liquids and liquefied gases in bulk.
- Carry out the initial actions on discovering a fire.
- Learn the use of fixed deck fire-fighting equipment including dry powder and foam.
- Learn the correct fire-fighting agents used to extinguish oil, chemical and liquefied gas fires.

TEACHING METHOD:
Conduct of Training with Classroom lectures, showing video and Practical demo.
ENTRY REQUIREMENT / TARGET GROUP:
Those undertaking this training must have completed Fire Prevention and Firefighting (Section A-VI/1-2 of STCW) or similar training acceptable to the DoS.
Training centers must ensure, through pre-course information and screening, that learners are fit to participate in all aspects of the training. If there is any doubt as to an individual’s ability to participate in such exercises an appropriate risk assessment should be carried out to determine what is required in order to proceed in a safe manner.
COURSE CERTIFICATE:
A certificate of course completion shall be issued to those who shall satisfactorily fulfill the course requirements. Certificate of Proficiency is issued by the Department of Shipping on completion of an MCQ and oral test.
