SHIP BOARD SAFETY OFFICER TRAINING COURSE (SOT)

Duration: 4 Days

COURSE AIM:

The overall aim of this Training Course is to provide the designated Safety Officer of the vessel, with the required knowledge and skills to effectively implement his duties and responsibilities in compliance with the following:

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Those who have successfully completed the course will be able to:
1. Systematically promote the Safety Culture of the company among all seafarers onboard the ship, sustaining a high level of safety and environmental consciousness.
2. Carry out safety-related inspections, identify potential hazards in the day to day operations of the vessel and help prevent incidents from occurring.
3. Carry out risk assessment, suggests improvements into the conduct of work, define measures to eliminate the hazards and to mitigate the risks.
4. Contribute to the reporting of near-miss incidents, as well as, of unsafe acts/conditions.
5. Encourage individual seafarers to behave responsibly and to proactively promote safe and healthy working conditions on board.
6. Undertake the role of the Safety Officer of the ship.

TEACHING METHOD:

Instructions will be undertaken mainly through a combination of lectures and tutorials.

ENTRY REQUIREMENT / TARGET GROUP:

This course is principally intended for the certification of candidates who requires taking a Safety officer. Training course as an employment pre-requisite. This course would also be of value to others who are in marine related jobs ashore.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

A Certificate of Completion is given to each candidate who satisfactorily fulfills the Course. Certificate of Proficiency is issued by the Department of Shipping on completion of an oral test.
