This course aims to provide students with the knowledge, skills & understanding on the operation of Radar and Automatic Radar Plotting Aids (ARPA). Ensuring that they are proficient and meet the required performance standards in accordance with the mandatory minimum requirements specified in table a-II/1 & b-1/12 of the STCW code.
This course is designed in accordance with IMO model course 1.07.
COURSE AIMS & OBJECTIVES:
A trainee successfully completing the course and passing the examination will be able to make efficient and effective use of radar as a navigational aid in open, congested, confined waters, recognize potential threats and make valid navigational and collision-avoidance decisions based on sound radar observation and plotting in compliance with the international regulations for preventing collisions at sea (COLREG).

- Fundamental principles, magnetic compass safe distances, radiation hazards, radar set characteristics
- External factors affecting detection, factors which may cause faulty interpretation, performance standards
- Setting up and maintaining displays
- Use of controls, Measurement of range and bearing
- Plotting
- Relative and True motion
- Course, speed and aspect of other ships
- CPA & TCPA, speed changes, the effect of course and speed changes, Reporting format and procedures
- The use of RADAR in navigation
- Position fixing, aids to radar navigation, parallel indexing techniques
- Radar and COLREG
- Description of ARPA system
- Principal of APRA systems, IMO performance standards for ARPA
- Operation of ARPA system - acquisition of targets, tracking capabilities and limitations, processing delays
- Setting up and maintaining displays, represent of target information, errors in interpretation, errors in displayed data, system operational tests, risk of over-reliance on ARPA
- Obtaining information from ARPA displays
- Application of COLREG
SYSTEM & EQUIPMENT:
The training center uses the latest transas equipment and simulator.
ENTRY REQUIREMENT / TARGET GROUP:
Entry to this course is open to Deck Officers prior issue of Class-3 Deck (CoC).
COURSE CERTIFICATE:
A Certificate of Completion is given to each candidate who satisfactorily fulfills the Course.
NOTE: At the end of the course, examination is conducted by the Department of Shipping who will issue the RNOL certificate to successful candidates.
