The course provides knowledge and practical understanding on the applicable provisions of the ISPS Code and Chapter XI-2 of SOLAS 74, as amended (special measures to enhance maritime security) and meets the requirements of Regulation VI/6 of the STCW Convention, as amended (mandatory minimum requirements for security-related training and instruction for all seafarers); and Section A-VI/6, Paragraph 4-8, Tables A-VI/6-1 and A-VI/6-2 of the STCW Code.
COURSE AIMS & OBJECTIVES:
The course provides the participants the required standard of competence to contribute to the enhancement of maritime security through heightened awareness, recognition of security threats and how to respond appropriately, enabling them to undertake their assigned duties under the Ship Security Plan (SSP).

After completion of the training, the participants shall be able to:
- Identify the current security threats and patterns.
- Recognize and detect weapons, dangerous substances and devices.
- Recognize, on a non-discriminatory basis, of characteristics and behavioral patterns of persons who are likely to threaten security.
- Identify techniques used to circumvent security measures.
- Comprehend security-related communications.
- Comprehend the emergency procedures and contingency plans.
- Understand the operation of security equipment and systems.
- Identify the testing, calibration and at-sea maintenance of security equipment and systems.
- Recognize the inspection, control, and monitoring techniques.
- Comprehend the methods of physical searches of persons, personal effects, baggage, cargo, and ship stores.

TEACHING METHOD:
Instructions will be undertaken through a series of lectures, videos and tutorials.
ENTRY REQUIREMENT / TARGET GROUP:
Entry to this course is open to all seafarers or other shipboard personnel who are expected to have designated security duties in connection with the SSP or required to undergo ship security awareness.
COURSE CERTIFICATE:
A certificate of course completion shall be issued to those who shall satisfactorily fulfill the course requirements. Certificate of Proficiency is issued by the Department of Shipping on completion of an oral test.
