Duration: 10 Days (70 hours)
This course is designed to enhance skills to the next level, from ‘Ordinary Seafarer Deck’ to ‘Able Seafarer Deck’. The trainees are taught advanced techniques covering different vessels and their parts, vessel maintenance, rope & wire skills, and much more. Participants acquire a more in-depth knowledge on safety procedures, personal protective equipment and other on-board skills better than that of an ‘Ordinary Seafarer Deck’. The course covers the lectures and practical exercises pursuant to the requirements Regulation II/5, under Chapter II of the STCW Convention, Section A-II/5, Table A-II/5, Specifications of minimum standards of competence of ratings as able seafarer deck, of the STCW Code, as amended.
COURSE AIMS & OBJECTIVES:
The course aims to enhance knowledge, understanding and practical skills of seafarers to enable them to demonstrate the required competence to perform the functions at the support level.
After the training, the participants shall be able to:
- Contribute to a safe navigational watch
- Contribute to berthing, anchoring and other mooring operations
- Contribute to the handling of cargo and stores
- Contribute to the safe operation of deck equipment and machinery
- Apply occupational health and safety precautions
- Apply precautions and contribute to the prevention of pollution of the marine environment
- Operate survival craft and rescue boats
- Contribute to shipboard maintenance and repair

TEACHING METHOD:
The course consists of both theoretical and practical sessions. The course will cover four specific areas like Navigation; Cargo handling and stowage; Controlling the operation of the ship and care for persons on board; Maintenance and repair. Theoretical sessions will be conducted in classrooms with modern facilities. Practical sessions can be conducted using CBT and or in workshops acquired.
ENTRY REQUIREMENT / TARGET GROUP:
This course is intended for Deck Ratings who:
– is not less than 19 years of age.
– has 12 months sea service after holding navigation watch rating certificate or 36 months sea service as GP rating including 18 months sea in the deck department after holding navigation watch rating certificate.
– Possesses Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boat certificate as per rule 15(1). (Govt. of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Ministry of Shipping Notification – Dated 8th February 2011)
– Possesses Able Seafarer Deck certificate as per rule 20. (Govt. of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Ministry of Shipping Notification – Dated 8th February 2011)
– Has Medical fitness as per rule 25 (Govt. of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Ministry of Shipping Notification – Dated 8th February 2011).
COURSE CERTIFICATE:
The trainee who completes the course will be issued a Certificate of attendance certifying that the holder meets or exceeds the level of knowledge specified in Section A-II/5 mandatory requirements for ratings as able seafarer deck. Proficiency certificate will be issued by Department of Shipping (DoS).
