Course Title: SECURITY TRAINING FOR SEAFARERS WITH DESIGNATED SECURITY DUTIES COVERING SECURITY AWARENESS TRAINING

The course provides knowledge and practical understanding on the applicable provisions of the ISPS Code and Chapter XI-2 of SOLAS 74, as amended (special measures to enhance maritime security) and meets the requirements of Regulation VI/6 of the STCW Convention, as amended (mandatory minimum requirements for security-related training and instruction for all seafarers); and Section A-VI/6, Paragraph 4-8, Tables A-VI/6-1 and A-VI/6-2 of the STCW Code.

COURSE AIMS & OBJECTIVES:

The course provides the participants the required standard of competence to contribute to the enhancement of maritime security through heightened awareness, recognition of security threats and how to respond appropriately, enabling them to undertake their assigned duties under the Ship Security Plan (SSP).

After completion of the training, the participants shall be able to:
  • know how to maintain the conditions set forth in a ship security plan
  • recognize security risks and threats
  • know how to undertake regular security inspections of the ship, and
  • use available security equipments and systems.

The course deals with the following subject areas:
  • Ship Security and The ISPS Code
  • Security Risks and Threats
  • Security Measures / Inspections
  • Security Equipment and Systems
  • Demonstration and practical activity on :
    • Testing, calibration and operation of a security equipment
    • Carrying out physical searches and non-intrusive inspections
    • Carrying out searches on hand carried bags/items
METHOD:

Classroom lecture-presentation and discussion reinforced with practical demonstrations.

ENTRY REQUIREMENT / TARGET GROUP:

Entry to this course is open to all seafarers or other shipboard personnel who are expected to have designated security duties in connection with the SSP or required to undergo ship security awareness.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

A certificate of course completion shall be issued to those who shall satisfactorily fulfill the course requirements. Certificate of Proficiency is issued by the Department of Shipping on completion of an oral test.
