Course Title: ABLE SEAFARER ENGINE RATINGS COURSE

Duration: 12 Days (70 hours)

This course in modular format covers core competencies such as perform engine watchkeeping duties, oversee fuel, bilge and ballast operations, operate equipment and machinery, operate electrical equipment and maintain engine room machinery and spaces specified in Section A-III/5 and Table A-III/5 of the 2010 Manila Amendments to the STCW Code. It will also cover the watchkeeping arrangement principles to be observed as stated in Section A-VIII/2, Part 4-2, 5-2 and 5-4 of the 2010 Manila Amendments to the STCW Code.

COURSE AIMS & OBJECTIVES:

This course aims to equip individual with operational skills, knowledge and attitudes of Able Seafarer Engine.
After the training, the participants shall be able to:

• contribute to a safe engineering watch
• contribute to the monitoring and controlling of an engine-room watch
• contribute to fuelling and oil transfer operations
• contribute to bilge and ballast operations
• contribute to the operation of equipment and machinery
• operate electrical equipment
• follow safety and hazard control procedures
• contribute in routine planned maintenance of equipment and machinery
• contribute in repairs of equipment and machinery; and carry out store operations.

COVERAGE / PROGRAM FOCUS:

1. Contribute to a safe engineering watch
2. Contribute to the monitoring and controlling of an engine-room watch
3. Contribute to fuelling and oil transfer operations
4. Contribute to bilge and ballast operations
5. Contribute to the operation of equipment and machinery
6. Safe use of electrical equipment
7. Contribute to shipboard maintenance and repair
8. Contribute to the handling of stores
9. Apply precautions and contribute to the prevention of pollution of the marine environment
10. Apply occupational health and safety procedures

FACILITIES:

1. Facilities for theoretical part
Ordinary classroom of minimum 25 places, equipped whit:
• Whiteboard
• PC computer
• Multimedia Projector with screen
• Demonstration table
Separate rooms, equipped with a table and chairs, will also be available to accommodate three or four groups of trainees during case studies and other group assignments
2. Facilities for practical part For the practical part of the course, all necessary equipments are available.

ENTRY REQUIREMENT / TARGET GROUP:

Engine ratings who shall have:

1. Be not less than 19 years of age
2. 12 months sea service after holding engineering watch rating certificate or 36 months sea service as GP rating including 18 months sea in the engine department after holding engineering watch rating certificate.
3. Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boat certificate as per rule 15(1). (Govt. of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Ministry of Shipping Notification – Dated 8th February 2011)
4. Able Seafarer Engine certificate as per rule 20. (Govt. of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Ministry of Shipping Notification – Dated 8th February 2011)
5. Medical fitness as per rule 25 (Govt. of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Ministry of Shipping Notification – Dated 8th February 2011).

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

The trainee who completes the course will be issued a Certificate of attendance certifying that the holder meets or exceeds the level of knowledge specified in Section A-III/5 and Table A-III/5 of the 2010 Manila Amendments to the STCW Code and proficiency certificate will be issued by Department of Shipping (DoS).
