Course Title:ABLE SEAFARER DECK RATINGS COURSE

Duration: 12 Days (70 hours)

The course covers lectures and practical exercises pursuant to the requirements prescribed in Regulation II/5, Mandatory minimum requirements for certification of ratings as able seafarer deck, of the 1978 STCW Convention, as amended, and Table A II/5, Specifications of minimum standards of competence of ratings as able seafarer deck, of the STCW Code 2010 Manila Amendments in the following functions:

Function 1: Navigation at the support level
Function 2: Cargo handling and stowage at the support level
Function 3: Controlling the operation of the ship and care for persons onboard at the support level
Function 4: Maintenance and repair at the support level

COURSE AIMS & OBJECTIVES:

The course aims to enhance knowledge, understanding and practical skills of seafarers to enable them to demonstrate the required competence to perform the functions at the support level.
After the training, the participants shall be able to:

• contribute to a safe navigational watch
• contribute to berthing, anchoring and other mooring operations
• contribute to the handling of cargo and stores
• contribute to the safe operation of deck equipment and machinery
• apply occupational health and safety precautions
• apply precautions and contribute to the prevention of pollution of the marine environment
• review the principle on how to operate survival craft and rescue boats and
• contribute to shipboard maintenance and repair.

COVERAGE / PROGRAM FOCUS:

1. Contribute to a safe navigational watch
2. Contribute to berthing, anchoring and other mooring operations
3. Contribute to the handling of cargo and stores
4. Contribute to the safe operation of deck equipment and machinery
5. Apply occupational health and safety precautions
6. Apply precautions and contribute to the prevention of pollution of the marine environment
7. Operate survival craft and rescue boats
8. Contribute to shipboard maintenance and repair

FACILITIES:

1. Facilities for theoretical part
Ordinary classroom of minimum 25 places, equipped whit:
• Whiteboard
• PC computer
• Multimedia Projector with screen
• Demonstration table
Separate rooms, equipped with a table and chairs, will also be available to accommodate three or four groups of trainees during case studies and other group assignments
2. Facilities for practical part For the practical part of the course, all necessary equipments are available.

ENTRY REQUIREMENT / TARGET GROUP:

Deck Ratings who shall:
- Not less than 19 years of age.
- 12 months sea service after holding navigation watch rating certificate or 36 months sea service as GP rating including 18 months sea in the deck department after holding navigation watch rating certificate.
- Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boat certificate as per rule 15(1). (Govt. of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Ministry of Shipping Notification – Dated 8th February 2011)
- Able Seafarer Deck certificate as per rule 20. (Govt. of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Ministry of Shipping Notification – Dated 8th February 2011)
- Medical fitness as per rule 25 (Govt. of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Ministry of Shipping Notification – Dated 8th February 2011).

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

The trainee who completes the course will be issued a Certificate of attendance certifying that the holder meets or exceeds the level of knowledge specified in Section A-II/5 mandatory requirements for ratings as able seafarer deck and proficiency certificate will be issued by Department of Shipping (DoS).
